Fade To Gray (not finished or edited) 2658 words
"Wait up, Kay!" I heard my best friend Loki yell from behind. I turned and saw Loki walking behind me, hands down at his side. Almost forgot I'm Kay Owens a girl from a small town in Canada. And this is one of best friends, Loki Fosters. We're both 15year olds with some pretty big secrets that we share with two others our age. "C'mon Loki," I whined. "Hurry up Low-keyyy." "Kay, you need to more patient." he said. I stopped and waited for him. Once he was at my side I kept walking. Our friends Gwen and Leo we were waiting for us at the library. Loki looked at his watched and walked a little faster. "Now your in a hurry." I said. "Time waits for no one,Kay." he said. His faded red hair brushed in his face as he speed-walked towards the library with me. I pushed back my yellow (not blonde, yellow) hair. I've known Loki for a long time, actually I know him from my past lives, I'm glad we get along fine now. We arrived at the library and we jogged inside. In the back Gwen and Leo sat at a table. Gwen's hear was resting on her hand and Leo had her nose in a large book. Gwen looked up and waved. She poked Leo's arm until she looked annoyed, but when she saw me and Loki her expression lightened up. Gwen and Leo were my other best friends. Leo had beautiful black hair with a blue tint, and Gwen had short brunette hair with a green flower always above her left ear. "She's being boring as always." Gwen said. I have known Gwen the least amount of time only one lifetime. I've known Leo the longest, for 17 lifetimes. And that's our secret, we all keep being reincarnated. And the funny thing is I keep meeting someone I already knew. But when I originally met Leo I was powerful male war general, but that's a different story. When I first meet Loki I was a adventurer. He was a monk I found at a temple. And I met Gwen when I was a nurse during the civil war. It's funny that we're all together now. But off somewhere there's a flower that was born when I was. Same goes for Loki, Leo, and Gwen. And whenever something goes wrong. Like dying from war or anything other than something non-natural one of the petals goes gray. And once all petals are gray your reincarnation cycle stops. Not everyone is reincarnated when they die, just a few who were chosen before birth. No one knows how many petals there are, so you never know hoe close you are to really dying. I've only died in a non-natural way three times, but that may be three times too many what if my flower only has four petals. And you know a petal had gone gray because as soon you wake up in your new life, one of your memories is a flower with a gray petal. Only one. "Kay? Hello?" I heard Gwen say to me. "Sorry! I was just think about my past lives." I said embarrassed. "You never change." Loki said patting my back. "Leo, it's time to come back to reality." I said shutting her book. She sighed, "Kay, you always have been a little rude.". Leo stood up and walked over to a book case and put the book back. "I'm hungry, let's go get cake! Loki's treat!" I said some what loudly throwing my arms up. "Don't volunteer me without permission." Loki scolded. "I'll pay." Gwen started, "I had a feeling we might want to get food so, I brought money." "Nice thinking, Gwen." Leo praised. "Yeah! Let's go get cake!" I yelled. I heard people 'shhh' me, and I mockingly 'shhhhh-ed' them back. "Calm down, Kay." Loki said. "Sorry for being girl." I responded. "Girls aren't supposed to be annoying." he shot back. "Oh snap! High five Loki!" Gwen said holding up her hand. Gwen high dived Loki while I turned to Leo. Her dark hair and eyes made her look mysterious even though she was just a quiet bookworm. I wish I looked mysterious, but I had bright yellow hair(to bright to be blonde) and darker yellow eyes. Almost forgot to mention that people who get reincarnated have the same hair color as their flower. I put my hands behind my head. I wonder how many gray petals everyone else has? I pondered. "Loki," I started. He looked at me and I knew he was listening, "How did you die in your past lives?". He blushed and I knew it was gonna be good. "Well this is one the second life I've been male in so I died in really girly ways in the past." Loki said not making eye contact with anyone but the ground. "Please continue, Loki" Gwen said interested. "Don't make me." he said. "Yes Loki, please go on." Leo said playing along. "We're making you." I said patting his back. He sighed loudly. Leo, Gwen and I were all holding back laughter. "First," I started, "What's a girly way to die?" "Oh you'll hear some in just a second." Loki said with a little bit if edge in his voice. He did things he didn't want to do for his friends, it was one of the reasons I respected him. “I died of silly things, starvation, I was beaten, drowning, dying in childbirth.” “Loki, those aren't all silly- 'girly' ways. What would you consider a manly way to die?” Gwen asked. “War. Gun wounds, stab wounds, being shot down.” He said quickly. “Typical modern teenage boy answer.” I said. “Loki, what happened in your past lives?” Leo asked. “More importantly,” I interrupted. “Why were you pregnant?” Loki blushed again. “I told you this is only the second life I've male in! Remember?” His voice still had a little bit of edge in it. “And Leo, back in most of my past lives I was a female, and I was expected to act like one. Hence, I kinda act like a girl now. At one point I was a slave, so I was beaten to death in that life. I was killed by a murder in the next. The mid to late 1800s were not a nice time for me. Then in my next life I was male for the first time. Some how I lived through that one and died naturally. Then I came back, as a girl again. Then I died in childbirth, don't ask I really don't wanna talk about that one. But that's a natural way so it didn't count against me. Next two lives I had happy lives, as females, and died of natural causes. Answer you question, Leo?” Loki concluded. Leo nodded and focused back on walking. "Loki, I'm sorry for saying this but, your past lives sound really boring without detail." I said turning around to face him. He shrugged. "Well at one point I was brought up as a monk." "What does that have to do with anything?" Gwen asked. Loki opened his mouth to speak. "Nothing." I answered for him. "Look! It's the bakery!" Leo exclaimed. Leo and I ran towards the towards at full speed. Gwen stayed behind with Loki and I heard him say, "Hope you brought your wallet." He then ran towards me and Leo.
I pulled the door open and the smell of the bakery hit me. "I think I'm in heaven." I muttered gravitating towards a table near the back. Leo followed behind me. Loki drifted in the door and came to where Leo and I were sitting. Gwen came over to us and asked what we wanted. After a short wait cookies, small cakes, cupcakes, and other small pasteries sat before us. My mouth was watering. Without thinking I grabbed a cookie and took a bite. The sugar tasted great after a long day of nothing-ness. Believe it or not, but if you don't do anything you actually get tired. There goes my plan for an all-nighter. I really need to finish my homework before spring break is over. I kept shoving cookie after cookie in my mouth and I didn't realize how many I ate until I reached back for one and none were left. “You ate them all, Miss fatty.” Loki said a little disappointed. “Just eat your cake Mr. Fosters.” I snapped, “Leo how many cookies were there?” I whispered. “15 large chocolate chips.” I blushed, I really ate 15 large cookies. Loki gave me the 'I told you so' glare and I gave him my 'oh shut up' face. Gwen chuckled a little and then put a piece cake in her mouth. Frosting stuck to her upper lip like a mustache. “Nice 'stache Gwen.” Loki said. Gwen immediately wiped her mouth. “Yeah, Mr. Fosters, eat your cake.” She said playfully. Leo finished her cupcake and sat back. Loki nibbled on a small red velvet cake. He looked up at Leo. She looked up at him then quickly turned away smiling. Loki shrugged and went back to nibbling away at the tiny cake. “We're gonna need a nice long run after this.” Leo finally said. “Agreed.” Gwen, Loki, and I said in sync. “I'll bring my dog, Elsie.” I said standing up and stretching. “About Elsie, how long have you known her?” Loki asked. “Since two lives ago. One as horse and the other as my bird.” I said looking out the window. “Let's go get the dog and run!” Gwen said excitedly. “I'm changing first.” Leo said quietly. “Me too. Sandles for running? I think not.” Loki said walking towards the door. “Fine,” Gwen started. “We'll meet at the park in ten minutes, don't be late.” She then waved and ran towards her home. Loki and Leo were my neighbors so we always walked together. Gwen lived across town. After a short walk we were home.
I ran upstairs and quickly changed into a loose t-shirt and some yoga pants. I quickly put my yellow hair in loose pigtails and ran down stairs. “Hi Elsie.” I said hooking her leash to her collar. “C'mon girl.” I said running out the door. My step-brother, Blake, was pulling the drive way as I locked the door. I waved than quickly walked over to Loki's house. He said hi to Elsie and then took the short walk with me to Leo's house a few houses down. She was in her front yard stretching. Her dark hair tied back in a pony tail. “Let's go.” Loki said. We nodded and walked to the park. “We should jog there to warm up.” Leo said. “Ok.” I said. We then started jogging and we were all quiet. 'This is awkward.' I thought. After passing a few blocks we arrived at the park. Gwen was wearing running shorts and a t-shirt. She saw up jogging and then joined us. And then the next few minutes were just awkward. We didn't talk or anything. 'Did something happen between Loki and Leo? Once me and Loki picked her up it's been awkward. Gwen's presence is only adding to the awkwardness. I bet she has no idea too. I wish Leo would tell me, I've known her quiet a while. Maybe ti just happened. Calm down Kay, you're over thinking. Say something. Say something.' “Gran's gonna be home tonight.” I blurted out. “That was random Kay.” Gwen said. “Tell her I said hi.” Leo said. “Can I come say hi? Hope she remembers me.”Loki said focusing forward. “You can all come! Be at my house in two hours.” I said without thinking. “Uh, ok.” Gwen said awkwardly. “Sure.” Leo answered. “Great!” Loki said happily. 'Oh boy.' I thought.
I walked in the door all sweaty to see my step-mom, step-brother,older sister, my dad, and Gran. I waved and than ran upstairs. 'Oh yeah!' I remembered, Elsie was still following me. I let her off her leash and made a bee-line for the bathroom. As soon as I closed the door I remembered I had to tell my family something. I slowly walked out. “Kay you can go take a shower.” My dad said. “Yeah stinky.” My step-brother, Blake tease. “I invited Loki, Leo, and Gwen over. Loki said he wanted to see Gran. And Leo and Gwen wanna met her.” I said quickly. I waited to be yelled at, but no one yelled. “Oh! How lovely! Young people want to meet me? Why surely you'll allow that, won't you Richard?” Gran said happily. “Yes mother.” My dad replied. I then ran back to the bathroom for a short shower. Elsie barked outside of the door during my shower. “Crap they're here! Good thing that was the fastest shower eve! Seven minutes!” I was now dress and drying my hair. I stepped out of the bathroom I bent down to pet Elsie. She barked and ran towards the door. Sure enough my friends were there. I opened the door and gestured for Gran to come over. “Hi Kay.” Gwen said waving. “Wasn't that run fun? I feel like we never ate at that bakery.” “Hello!” Leo said warmly. “Nice you see you again, Kay's Grandma.” Loki said with his hands in his pockets. “Oh Kay, your friends are wonderful! And nice to see you again Mr. Fosters!” Gran said patting Loki's head. She slowly walked over to Leo and Gwen and hugged them. Loki and I couldn't help but laugh a little by the faces Leo and Gwen made. “Come, sit down we're about to have a little bit to eat.” she continued. I sat down next to Gran and my friends sat in line to my left. We then had a nice little dinner with corn, stew, rice, potatoes, and cookies. But Loki, Leo, Gwen, and I had no cookies. My younger sister, Ce-Ce, reached out and grabbed two cookies. She immediately started nibbling on one. Blake then pointed to cookies and back at himself over and over. “Go ahead.” I said. “Yeah yeah yeah. Take 'em” Loki said. “Help yourself.” Gwen mumbled. “I'm not in the mood for sweets at the moment.” Leo added. Blake shrugged and took the whole plate of cookies. He scarfed them down one by one, very quickly. “Kay, Loki, Leo, Gwen, it's not like you guys to turn down sweets.” My step-mom said. “Do you all feel fine?” “Kay, you usually love my sweets. And Loki said they were the best last year.” Gran said concerned. “It's just that we all went to that little bakery earlier. And we're all kinda cookied out.” I said. “Not fair why wasn't I invited?” Ce-Ce questioned. “I'm sorry Ce-Ce, I didn't think about inviting you. It's just we...” I stopped short not knowing how to end my sentence nicely. “We were on our way home from the library.” Loki finished. Leo, Gwen, and I nodded in agreement. “Thanks.” I whispered. “Welcome.” Loki whispered. “Aww look honey, they're finishing each other's sentences already.” My step-mom said loudly. “We're just friends!” I snapped. I like Loki, but just as a friend. I've known him a long time, and I know what all his emotions are and how he reacts in different situations. He's nice, but once you see everyone completely, you can never see them the same again. And the first time I met him, he was a young prairie girl named, Lucy. And I was a handsome cowboy.
